PETER’S STORY

With a new governor in his state, Peter had to reapply for his director position with the state public health division.  He wanted a résumé that really showed his leadership contributions.  One challenge was to incorporate his entrepreneurial “weekend and evening job” of owning and managing a successful athletic chain and fitness programs.  While his business was easy to package as related to his value in health and fitness, we didn’t want his entrepreneurial side projects to overshadow his full-time executive position with the state.  I solved this by listing his athletic club in a section on page two called “Business Development” — but also noting his business in a callout box as part of his career summary. Peter also had a very impressive military record, as the youngest commander to serve in Operation Iraqi Freedom.  I made sure his impressive role here—he won a Bonze Star—landed near the top of the resume.  His executive level and the amount of strong content made this résumé a good candidate for a three-pager.

 CLARK’S STORY

While Clark had been out of the military sometime, he has been performing operations support / construction management roles overseas in Iraq.  Much of his work has been performed in high-risk situations and environments.  His 20-year military career is distinguished and greatly adds to his leadership. Therefore, I wanted to make this crystal clear in his career summary. For this resume, I felt his accomplishments and scale of his work does the needed selling.  My approach, therefore, was to keep it to-the-point and let the facts speak for themselves.  The bolding of some of the quantified scale of his work helps the reader immediately see Clark’s management level and ability.
